Figurative Language

Remember when we were studying figurative language in class?

What made you think of that?

Well, I was thinking of all the different kinds that we learned about.

Why?

Hiking up this mountain made me remember some of the examples Mrs. Krueger used.

Like when she taught us about similies.

Right. She used the example "This mountain is as tall as ten skyscrapers."

And we could change that sentence into a metaphor very easily.

It would be changed to "This mountain is ten skyscrapers tall!"

A similie states that something is like something else and uses the words "like or as" in the comparison.

And a metaphor says something is something else and uses the words "is or are" in the comparison.

And remember hyperbole?

How could I? It is my favorite type of figurative language.

You do like to exaggerate quite a bit.

Whatever! I can see for a thousand miles!

No you can't. Can you really?

Of course not! That's what hyperboles are-exaggerations or stretching the truth.

I told you that you were good at it.

The sleeping mountains were very quiet.

What are you talking about? Mountains aren't human-they can't sleep.

I know that. Weren't you paying attention in class?

Oh, right! Personification is when you give something that isn't human, a human ability or characteristic.

Yes! The mountains can't really sleep.

It's all coming back to me now. The wind raced around the mountain peak.

Great job!

Mrs. Krueger was right. It does make our language more interesting.

See, it's not that hard!

I suppose you're right.
