Hey Mr. Tweeters, did you know that the first Webcomic featured anthromorphic characters like us? It lasted from the late 80s until the late 90s.

Why no sparkles, I didn't. Furries creep me out. What about webcomics today?

"Furry" comics are typically seen in print comics like garfield,. webcomics today are usually autobiographical and feature a variety of characters from stick figures to dinosaurs to ninjas.

I like ninjas. but stick figures and dinosaurs seem silly, and i don't care about someone's boring life. how did these comics get so popular?

The wonderful thing about webcomics today is that you don't need to be a good artist. Although some comics don't feature brilliant art, they're supported by thoughtful, creative, amusing text.

But reading is for books and newspapers! What about the talented artists that create superhero comics and graphic novels?

Graphic novels and superhero comics still have a place in comic culture, but the internet has created a new platform for self-publishing. It's cheaper, you get more free publicity through link exchanges and social networking sites. Greater publicity can lead to book deals, and becoming a "real" artist.

It sounds like it's still a lot of work..

Deiniftely, but it allows for people outside the status quo to gain recognition for their comics and art in general. Most of the successful creators of comics and graphic novels are white men like neil gaiman and stan winston. The internet is a space for everyone to create comics and have an equal chance of gaining recognition.

Wait, that sounds too good to be true, the internet isn't that much of a democracy!

Hooray!

You're right, Mr. Tweeters, but we'll save digital politics for another day. Let's look at some webcomic case studies!
